As a US citizen, you do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. However, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date and have at least two consecutive blank visa pages. Regarding health, the Kruger is a malaria-risk area; we strongly recommend consulting your doctor about malaria prophylactics (like Malarone) before you fly. While no specific vaccines are mandated for entry from the US, we suggest being up-to-date on routine shots and considering Hepatitis A and Typhoid.

While major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted at our rest camps, shops, and restaurants, we recommend carrying some South African Rand (ZAR) for smaller tips and local markets. You can withdraw ZAR at the airport upon arrival or at the ATM in Skukuza Camp. Please notify your US bank of your travel plans to avoid any “fraud protection” holds on your cards while you are in the bush.

Tipping is a common practice in South Africa and is a great way to show appreciation for your guide’s expertise. For a 4-day safari, a general guideline for US travelers is approximately $10–$15 (R200–R300) per person, per day for your guide. You can tip at the end of your 4-day trip in ZAR or USD (though ZAR is preferred for the guide’s convenience). For lodge staff or porters, $2–$5 is standard.

Most major rest camps like Skukuza have cell reception and limited Wi-Fi hotspots, but it can be significantly slower than US speeds. Once we are out on the game drives, service is often non-existent. We recommend downloading an eSIM (like Airalo) or purchasing a local SIM card at the Johannesburg (OR Tambo) airport for the best data rates. Think of your time in the vehicles as a “digital detox” where the only connection you need is with the wildlife!
