Top 6 Tips for Your First Safari Adventure

Pack Smart, Travel Light

The most common mistake for first-time visitors is underestimating the temperature swing. Even in the summer, pre-dawn game drives in an open vehicle are chilly. Pack a "windbreaker" or light jacket, a fleece, and a scarf. By 10:00 AM, the African sun is intense, and you’ll want to be down to a T-shirt and shorts. Stick to neutral colors to blend in and avoid attracting insects.

Manage Your Expectations

While the Kruger is world-famous for the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo), safari is not a zoo. Embrace the "Small Five" and the incredible birdlife too. Some of the best memories come from watching a dung beetle or a family of baboons. Trust your Nhongo guide, they are experts at tracking, but nature follows its own schedule.

Practice "Safari Etiquette"

Wildlife in the Kruger is habituated to the shape of a safari vehicle, but they are still wild and dangerous. Keep your voice to a whisper at sightings so you don't startle the animals. Never lean out of the vehicle or stand up unless your guide says it is safe.

Respect the Wild

When you enter the Kruger National Park, you are a guest in the animals' home. While the wildlife may seem indifferent to the safari vehicles, it is vital to remember they are entirely wild and unpredictable. Never feed any animal, especially the monkeys and baboons at rest camps. Feeding them is a death sentence; it makes them aggressive toward humans, and "problem animals".

Health and Hydration

Consult your doctor about malaria prophylactics well before you fly. Also, remember that the "African Sun" is much stronger than what you might experience in the States. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, apply SPF 30+ sunscreen even on cloudy days, and drink more water than you think you need.

The "Digital Detox"

In the heart of the Kruger, cell service can be spotty and Wi-Fi is often limited to specific areas like the main lodge or restaurant. Embrace the "Digital Detox." A safari is one of the few places left where you can truly unplug. Put the phone down once you’ve snapped your photos and listen to the sounds of the bush, it’s a far better soundtrack than any notification.
